Leslie's story

The first thing you notice about Leslie is her smile. It brightens up any room. But smiling wasn’t always easy. Leslie was brought into foster care from an environment of abuse and neglect. She was 8 years old. She was all set to be adopted by a relative when, on her 12th birthday, her kidney went into renal failure.

The diagnosis put the adoption on hold and brought Leslie to the Medically Needy Foster Care program at Children’s Home Society of Florida. She was placed on the kidney transplant list in early December. Miraculously, a perfect kidney match was found within months, and she received her transplant in the spring.

Although Leslie will be on medication her whole life and takes trips once a month to Gainesville for medical analysis, she is a vibrant young lady with a sweet spirit who enjoys every moment of her life, from reading to helping people.
